We are at a pivotal moment in Scotland’s history. The current political landscape is not delivering the results we need, and a different approach is required. That is why I am proposing the creation of a new political party—one that will bring fresh ideas and practical solutions to the forefront of Scottish politics.
A Fresh Start: Scotland deserves a political movement that is not stuck in old ways of thinking. This new party would offer a fresh perspective, blending progressive ideals with practical solutions that work for everyone. We would aim to strike a balance—being centre-left means pushing for social progress while ensuring our policies are grounded in reality.
Creative Problem-Solving: I believe in blue sky thinking—the idea that no solution is too bold if it can make a real difference. This party would focus on innovative approaches to the challenges Scotland faces, from climate change to economic inequality. We would look beyond the obvious answers and be willing to try new things to get better results. I understand that this may all seem like pie in the sky, but Scotland is crying out for more optimistic politics. I recognise the need to be realistic but also am certain that we must dare to think creatively in search of new, innovative solutions.
Empowering Communities: I want to build a Scotland where everyone can thrive. This new party would work to ensure that communities across the country have a real say in the decisions that affect them. By decentralising power and giving local areas more control, I believe we can create a government that truly listens and responds to the needs of the people.
A Greener Economy: We would focus on transitioning to a green economy, creating jobs that are not only good for people but also good for the planet. I want Scotland to lead the way in renewable energy and sustainable practices.
Fairness for All: We would be committed to reducing inequality. This means ensuring everyone has access to quality healthcare, education, and housing, regardless of where they live or how much they earn.
Lifelong Learning: Education is the key to a better future. We would prioritise innovative education policies that prepare Scots for the jobs of tomorrow, focusing on skills development and lifelong learning opportunities. We would advocate for a realistic approach to schooling, shifting focus to revolve around providing genuinely beneficial knowledge and setting our children up for the future with lessons in things such as personal finance management.
Responsive Government: We would make government more transparent and responsive by using technology to improve how decisions are made and how people can get involved. My goal is to create a political system that works with the people, not just for them.
Proportional Representation: As an example of a commitment to innovative ideas, I would explore supporting the adoption of a Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) system to elect Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). This system, which balances direct representation with overall proportionality, ensures that the diversity of voters’ views is accurately reflected in parliament while maintaining a strong connection between representatives and their constituencies.
At the heart of this new party would be a commitment to the fundamental principle of freedom of speech. A healthy democracy is one where all voices are heard, respected, and considered. Our political landscape thrives when we engage openly with others, especially those whose opinions differ from our own. Sure, we may not agree but I think too often today, we are so reluctant to acknowledge that other people think differently from us, and whilst we do not have to like or agree with their opinions, we should respect their right to hold them.
I am dedicated to creating a political culture where debate is encouraged, not shut down. I understand that progress often comes from listening to different perspectives and finding common ground. This new party would prioritise civil discourse, ensuring that our policies are shaped by a wide range of voices, including those that challenge our own views.
This commitment to freedom of speech means that we would actively seek out and engage with diverse opinions. I believe that by understanding the concerns and ideas of others, we can develop more inclusive and effective solutions for Scotland’s future. This openness is not just a strategy—it is a core value that will guide how this party operates and how it would govern.
I believe in celebrating successes and recognising the achievements that move Scotland forward. Equally, we would be committed to owning our mistakes, learning from them, and being transparent with the public when we fall short. Accountability and humility are essential to building trust and maintaining the integrity of this movement.
Scotland is at a crossroads. We are facing significant challenges, but also have incredible opportunities to reshape our future. I know that many people are looking for a new kind of political leadership—one that is not afraid to take risks and try innovative ideas whilst remaining focused on improving the lives of ordinary Scots.
To bring this vision to life, I need like-minded individuals who share my passion for change and my belief in the power of fresh ideas. We would start by building a solid foundation, reaching out to communities across Scotland, and developing policies that reflect the real needs and hopes of the people.
